Weather in Dubai
For a desert, Dubai is sure diverse in it's weather patterns. From Haboobs to monsoons to hot, sweaty days. There is a lot of weather to experience.
Here is a graph depicting the overall average temperatures in Dubai over a time span of 12 months. The temperatures and humidity tend to be high in the summer time and lower in the winter months because of it's subtropical location and the arid climate. It's so arid in The United Arab Emirates that roughly only 720 square kilometers are irrigated, and other areas are experiencing desertification.
The graph of Dubai's rainfall shows percipitation in mm, average rainfall days, and that the most dry weather occurs between May and July, the hottest months of the summer. Most of the rainfall occurs between November and April with South westerly monsoons being very popular and cool down the high temperatures.
Since rainfall isn't too prevalent in Dubai, we'll focus on the weather aspects that are. Haboobs are not at all uncommon in Dubai. There is a lot of sand and dust that can be easily swept up by the winds and carried into the city with a storm. This usually occurs when a low pressure area is created in Dubai and from Saudi Arabia the North Westerly (Shumal in arabic) winds blow along with the southern winds, and sweep up the sand or dust that has been built up in the mountains to the East, and then carries all the debris to Dubai. These sand storms, or haboobs, can last for days and cause minimal visibility even though it doesn't get as bad as Hollywood depicts. https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Da4N5c4UPHA In this Mission Impossible clip, the haboob seems very powerful and the visibility is completely scarce but the reality of a sandstorm in Dubai would look more like...
A real Haboob/sandstorm in Dubai. The visibility is affected but is less dramatic than in a Hollywood production.
