Dubai Location and Formation
09/19/2012 20:19Dubai, United Arab Emirates is located at 25 degrees North (latitude), and 55 degrees East (longitude). In the eastern region of Dubai are the Hajar Mountains. These mountains are interesting because they have slopes that drop straight into the sea. This area is named Ru'us Al-Jibal. To the west of the Hajar Mountains there is oil bearing strata from the mesozoic times deep under the ground. To the south of the mountains the upper mantle is made up of complex sedimentary and igneous rocks. The igneous rocks that are part of the oceanic crust and the mantle are called ophiolites. Ophiolites appear after years and years of surface exposure, making the Arabian Platform one of the most excellent spots to study ophiolites since it has the most exposure compared to anywhere else in the world. Dubai also resides next to a desert by the name of Rub 'Al Khali Desert in which, 250 meter tall sand dunes can be discovered, or an occasional oasis. Dubai is also surrounded by 3 bodies of water: Arabian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, and Straight of Hormuz. Dubai is very diverse in terms of surroundings, landscapes, and outdoor activities.
